🇪🇺 POW Gets Political in Strasbourg

Protect Our Winters Europe Advocates for Climate Action with Manifesto Handover to European Politicians

(Strasbourg, April 23, 2024) – Yesterday, Protect Our Winters Europe (POW EU) demonstrated its commitment to driving climate action forward by delivering its European Elections manifesto to a diverse range of politicians spanning the political spectrum. Present in Strasbourg were POW EU, POW FR, POW DE, and POW NL, in representation of all POW chapters in Europe and the whole outdoor community.

The manifesto, a culmination of collective efforts from POW chapters across Europe, signed by over 100 organisations, was received by representatives from the Greens, the Socialists and Democrats (S&D), the Renew Europe group, and the European People’s Party (EPP). POW across Europe fully supports the EU Green Deal because the organisation believes in making our planet greener for everyone’s future. Among the distinguished attendees were German MEPs Jutta Paulus (Greens/EFA) and Peter Liese (EPP), Mohammed Chahim from the Netherlands (S&D), and Austrian MEPs Andreas Schieder and Günther Sidl (S&D), as well as French representatives Laurence Farreng (Renew), Lydie Massard (Greens), and David Cormand (Greens).

During the event and in the meetings, held both outdoors in the sunshine as well as inside the European Parliament, POW Representatives engaged in constructive dialogues with the politicians, emphasising the critical need for immediate action on climate, nature conservation, low-carbon mobility, and sustainable economic models.

“As firm believers in the mission of the EU Green Deal, we advocate for its full support from the entire outdoor community,” stated Jonas Schneider, Executive Director of Protect Our Winters Europe. “To this end, we offer recommendations focused on priorities such as supporting a green energy transition, promoting low-carbon mobility, accelerating biodiversity restoration, and ending unsustainable business models.”

The manifesto urges an end to fossil fuel subsidies, the prioritization of renewable energy, increased investment in rail infrastructure, enhanced funding for biodiversity restoration, and the enactment of climate legislation that fosters responsible consumption practices among citizens.

“Our conversations with the candidates revealed a shared sense of urgency,” continued Schneider “We hope to harness this momentum and translate it into meaningful action at the ballot box in June.”

Protect Our Winters Europe remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for bold climate policies and mobilizing the outdoor community to address the pressing challenges of climate change.
