31st October to 12th of November 2021. It is the most important annual climate conference and was initiated three decades ago by the United Nations. After not taking place as planned in 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, COP26 deals with exceptionally high expectations from governments, companies, and the civil society alike. The reasons for this are manifold, however three of them stand out.
At the start of this winter, more than 50 of the most accomplished outdoor athletes in Europe, from mountain guides to mountain bikers, climbers to speed skiers, freeriders to highliners, stepped up to add their voices to our #LeadTheWay campaign pressing European leaders to show maximum climate ambition in setting Europe’s 2030 climate target.
In addition to unsustainable human rights grievances, climate change is also putting a dark cloud over the Olympic Games. We asked a researcher, an Olympic athlete, a climate expert and a representative of the Finnish Olympic Committee how to make the Olympics more environmentally sustainable.
