Meet the POW Team

Jonas is a passionate snowboarder, splitboarder and surfer. He is a serial entrepreneur and has worked in the fashion business for almost 20 years, having launched, co-founded and managed successful (as well as less successful) international brands. Today he divides his time between POW, his consultancy for fashion companies, specialising in sustainability, and his impact investment activities as a business angel mostly in climate tech start-ups.

As an outdoors enthusiast, Jonas is eager to use his time, experience and skills to support POW in protecting what we most love.

Dan is a passionate snowboarder, splitboarder, mountain biker, climber, and a poor but enthusiastic surfer. But most of his adult life has been spent as a whitewater kayaker & athlete.

He has paddled some of the remotest and hardest rivers across Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia over the last 25 years, with kayaking defining his love of the environment and his desire to protect it.

Dan has spent the last decade as an environmental ambassador for several outdoor brands and been involved in the creation of 2 environmental NGOs. His activism has focused on engaging the outdoor community in the preservation of our last wild places, be they in the heart of the Himalayas or behind the local village.

Erika grew up in Sweden and began to ski almost at the same time she learned to walk. She started to shred in a Ski Club when she was 6 years old, having her home slopes both in her home town Stockholm and in a small resort in northern Sweden. Erika competed professionally in Alpine skiing and Ski Cross and has also been a ski coach for youths, all of which has taken her to resorts all over Europe. Through her many years of skiing, she has experienced the reduction of ski season lengths, as well as seeing the glaciers she used to ski on retreat. These changes encouraged her to make two active choices: first, to focus her master studies on sustainable development and, second, to move to Innsbruck, to reduce long travels and be closer to the mountains and snow secure areas. 

Professionally Erika has a background in UX- and Service design as well as Innovation- and Project management, with experience in circular economy and sustainable development. She conducted her master thesis project with a Swedish sustainable outdoor apparel brand, investigating sustainable consumer behaviors and how companies can design for circular consumers. In 2020 Erika led a project for POW Sweden and is now continuing to combine her professional experience with her passion for the winter with POW EU.

Alistair has worked as an environmental practitioner for 25 years, and he considers turning science and theory into practical applications one of the most effective ways to influence policy decisions. Alistair has spent most of this time working in the grassroots NGO sector on river and watershed restoration, and was a founder of an umbrella body to support community-led river restoration across the UK and Ireland. Alistair has a strong history of working with like-minded people across Europe on river management, climate adaptation, and recovery of natural processes including from dam removal.

Alistair carried out fellowship research on climate change and rivers in 2007 in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest which is indirectly how he found himself now working as executive Director of UK Operations for the UK's largest NGO working on old growth forest protection, and reversal of deforestation within the UK. He also sits on the expert advisory group for the UK water industry's net zero ambitions, and has worked hard on developing financial approaches to environmental problems.

Alistair lives in Cumbria in the North of England and can be found exploring the hills on a home split board on the few remaining snow days, parawaiting with friends through the summer, or swimming behind his kayak when he can find someone sensible enough to rescue him.

Winter has always been Megan’s favourite season, so she was interested in Protect Our Winters from the second she heard the name. Megan has spent most of her life in the western United States, where she worked first as an attorney representing non-profit organisations in federal and state litigation focusing on protecting water quality, and the environmental impacts of the production and combustion of coal and fossil gas.

Later, Megan shifted to policy work to develop solutions to transition to a clean energy system. The western U.S. will always have a place in Megan’s heart, and especially her most recent home of Taos, New Mexico, where her two children were born (now 13 and 10). But after almost 15 years in one place, Megan’s wanderlust took over and she decided she was ready to gain new perspective on her work and to explore new places in Europe. She now lives in Brussels, Belgium, where she continues her work with the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) on energy policy, focusing specifically on how to transition away from fossil gas in both the U.S. and Europe.

Megan’s favourite places to be are in the mountains on skis or swimming in any large body of water with her children. She is also enjoying visiting new places throughout Europe by train, and loves being able to now commute by bike, especially when she has time to stop for a good coffee and a pastry.

Nature has always been Kaity's greatest love. As an avid outdoor enthusiast who grew up between the Big Apple and the Adirondack Mountains of New York, time spent in wild places directly impacted her view of the world. So much so that it inspired her to follow a university path split between international business and environmental policy.

Upon completing her studies, Kaity was privileged enough to have already experienced an internship in China, a semester in Sweden, and a summer on a Norwegian diary farm. Her experiences abroad made one thing clear: we were in the middle of an environmental crisis, and humanity's need for climate change solutions was immense.

Since then, Kaity has worked hard to build up her skills as a generalist, learning how the world works and thinks across industries (maritime shipping, regenerative agriculture, tourism & hospitality, and digital marketing). Such experiences continue to reinforce her belief in the need for a deeper understanding of our global interconnections and interdependencies if we truly want to stop climate change.

Today, Kaity lives in Norway and continues to spend her free time exploring nature’s playground through climbing, trail running, hiking, skiing, mountain biking, and chasing after her energetic Alaskan Husky, Juno. And, as always, she is eager to share the ingenious workings of the natural world with anyone who will listen.

Living in British Columbia Liz’s love of all things outdoors clashed with the frustration she experienced living in shared accomodations and working in the hospitality industry where individual efforts never felt big enough. From ski touring to climbing and mountain biking in the coast mountains, her drive to get active about protecting these beautiful spaces was only solidified. Introduced in 2018 to POW Canada, their mission and ideology resonated with her, and opened her eyes to outdoor sports as an entry point to climate activism, this snowballed into volunteering for POW EU while simultaneously applying to study a MSc in Environmental Policy  in University College Dublin. 

Half way through her studies, Liz believes that the best way to protect the places we love from a changing climate will come from a mixture of innovative policy, sparked from public pressure and community level engagement and activism.

This thinking aligns with her work at POW EU where she helps to facilitate our Athlete Ambassador Training Series, ‘POWer Hour’ which aids our Ambassadors in their journey as climate advocates and in mobilising and inspiring their followers also get active in the fight against climate change.

An avid alpinist, snowboarder, mountain biker, guide, and life adventurer, Molina previously served as international director at The Climate Reality Project, where he designed the organization’s climate leadership trainings and oversaw its post-Paris Agreement international strategy. Prior to his work at Climate Reality, Molina led strategy and programs as deputy director at the Alliance for Climate Education (ACE).

Molina grew up in the highlands of Guatemala and has a deeply rooted respect and relationship with the mountains and outdoor culture. He has trained corporate leaders, government officials, NGO groups, athletes and activists, on climate change strategies, communications, and engagement. He has spoken widely on climate policy including for the World Bank, IBM, the Mexican Senate, the Brazilian Forum on Climate Change, and various global stages. Mario now calls the Rockies home, where he lives with his wife and peak-bagging Australian Shepherd outside Nederland, Colorado.

Director and sustainable development consultant at AIR coop, Thibault has been working in the outdoor industry for more than 15 years. Former president of the environmental NGO Protect Our Winters- France, he is now part of the board of Protect Our Winters - Europe & France.  But more important than anything else, he is the father of 2 little blond heads that he brings out into nature whenever he can !

Heidi is a glaciologist, Director of Outreach at the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative and Fellow International of The Explorers Club. She teaches Glaciology at the University Centre in Svalbard (Norway). Her field of expertise is in glacier dynamics. She travels regularly to the polar regions and highest mountains of the world to better understand how glaciers react to climate change. She is currently leading two science outreach projects: Climate Sentinels, a team of female scientists heading to Svalbard in April 2021, and The Last Tropical Glaciers, an educational project on the most endangered glaciers on Earth.

Tom ran legendary freeride snowboard shop Zero G in Chamonix, France since 2006 where he grew the shop’s snowboard business and implemented a successful multi-channel strategy. For the last decade he’s been Senior Snowboard Writer at Boardsport SOURCE and the head of the illustrious ISPO Award Snowsports Jury. Tom has fundraised for POW France for years through film premiere events and a successful merchandising programme. Tom’s extensive network and creative & commercial acumen remain key to Protect Our Winters’ European growth.

Chris was born in Houston, TX before moving to Innsbruck at a young age, a city he still calls home today. His passion for the mountains was developed through snowboarding, a sport that continues to be a mainstay both in his personal and professional life.

Today, Chris is the Director of Integrated Marketing for Burton and a driving force in sharing the company’s value-based approach. A challenge only second to passing his love for snowboarding and the outdoors to his kids Joni and Lauri.

As Chief Development Officer at the Anglo-Nordic advisory firm Xynteo, Rick works with executives in global companies as they develop strategic responses to seismic shifts in society, the marketplace and in the natural world. With clients spanning companies like Unilever, Equinor, Verizon and more, his particular specialty is around how leaders learn, drive change and adapt in times of tremendous change. Climate change and rising social inequality feature very significantly in this work. While Rick is originally from Vermont (USA), today he lives with his three children in Oslo, Norway and spends his free time skiing, mountain-biking and climbing.

Mat Schaer’s childhood dream became reality after finishing high school when he passed pro in snowboard and could focus full time on his passion. With a start in slopestyle competitions, he rapidly turned his focus on the backcountry and integrated international snowboard video productions allowing him to chase the best snow in the most beautiful mountains around the world.

He could have been satisfied “living this good life” as long as possible, but Mat’s temperament always pushed him to look for meaningful new challenges. During his early years of professional career, he started to care more about environmental and climate issues, inspired by his brother who was studying geosciences. Reading reports and books on these topics motivated him to start in 2012 a degree in Environmental sciences and Engineering at the Swiss Institute of Technology in parallel to his snowboard career.

6 years later, with lots of efforts and compromises involved, he obtained his Master’s degree. Meanwhile he has also found new sponsors, JONES and Picture Organic Clothing, that share his environmental values. These new partnerships comforted him in his will to enjoy the outdoors with a smaller environmental footprint and use his position to raise awareness. To him, accessing the mountains in a low carbon way is fully relevant as the footprint of alpine sports comes primarily from travelling. Schaer does not own a car, so he rocks up from the train station in his snowboard boots, carrying his splitboard and hoping to inspire others.

His commitment gave rise to the movie Shelter, an adventure using local public transport and splitboards to go sleep in mountain huts and look for new peaks to hike and ride. Mat Schaer’s idea behind it was to show that not only is it possible to make a professional snowboard movie with a minimal carbon footprint, but to illuminate that sometimes the greatest discoveries lie in our very own backyards. The film features POW’s creator Jeremy Jones, his adulthood idol as he likes to call him.

Right after the shooting of Shelter, Mat started a new job as a scientific collaborator at the Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology where he freshly obtained a permanent position. Besides, he is a motivated ambassador for Protect Our Winter Switzerland since its creation in 2017.

I am a climate-phobic winter sports enthusiast, mother of an active snowboarder and a communications expert, journalist and non-fiction writer specialising in climate and sustainability issues. I currently work as a senior consultant in a communications agency specialising in sustainability. I am passionate about protecting winters and want to be involved in climate and environmental issues.

Winter, winter sports and climate work have long inspired me. I have written books on snow and climate change (On the Trail of Snow) and on responsible tourism. I have also been an active columnist on these topics. In my free time, I spend a lot of time in snow activities and ski resorts, as our whole family enjoys skiing. In addition, my son is an active snowboarder in the Helsinki Snowboard Club. As a hobby I sometimes work as a ski instructor in Sipoo Talma.

Winters are already changing rapidly in Finland. For us Finns, snow is the thing that makes us most aware of the effects of climate change. I am passionate about protecting it and also about highlighting all the things we are losing through snow.

As co-founder of POW Italy, she strives to activate the Italian community by inspiring others to be the change. In addition, her studies in nonprofit management and public policy came in handy for the creation of a new POW chapter in Europe. Her passion for mother nature manifests in hiking, snowboarding/split boarding and being outdoors whenever she can.

My energy towards sustainability is future-oriented – future generations should be able to enjoy nature just like we do, it's that simple. Within POW I am looking for ways to connect all stakeholders in this climate crisis to meet the challenges and work together. I get up every day with enthusiasm, creativity, passion for nature and love for my kids.

Fredrik has been engaged in POW since 2017, been a member of the board since 2020 and is now the chapter head of Sweden.
Fredrik and his family live in Stockholm where he works in digital product development. You can often meet him on skis, snowboards, two wheels or running in the mountains around Åre.

Nicholas founded POW in Switzerland in 2017, convinced that his passion for the mountains and the protection of our planet could be successfully channelled in an organisation that has its roots in the outdoor community. An avid backcountry skier and father of three, he holds a Ph.D. in political science and has extensive experience working for government as well as in public affairs and political communication.
